This isn't quite a question about technology; it's a question about identity. If the digital version remembers everything, behaves identically, and acts on the same values, what's missing? Different philosophical traditions give different answers. The continuity view says nothing essential is missing. The bodily-continuity view says everything that mattered about you was the embodied thread; what's left is a high-fidelity replica.

Why people split

One side treats personal identity as patternistic: if the pattern survives, the person survives. The other treats personal identity as biological: the digital version is a very good imitation of you that begins to exist at the same moment the actual you ends.

What the split says

Technology rarely asks for permission once it works, so the ethics has to land before deployment. Once votes come in, this section will show how voters balance capability against risk.

Worth asking yourself

  • Does ease here come at someone else’s expense?
  • What would you give up to keep this capability?
