"Freedom" sounds simple until you realize there are at least two incompatible versions of it. Negative freedom: no external constraints. Positive freedom: the actual capacity to act on your choices. A person with formal rights but no resources has one but not the other โ and most political conflict is really a hidden dispute over which definition takes priority.
Why people split
Your experience of freedom shapes which version feels most real. If you've been constrained by systems โ poverty, discrimination, lack of access โ positive freedom (capacity to act) feels urgent. If you've been constrained by interference โ surveillance, overreach, coercion โ negative freedom (absence of obstacles) feels fundamental. Both are describing real deprivations.
