These dilemmas put rules and circumstances against each other and demand a verdict. Choosing “Stay silent — one dissent causes a mistrial, wasting time and traumatizing the victim's family again” prioritises the letter of the law; choosing “Dissent — your honest judgment is your only duty, even if it collapses the process” gives more weight to the spirit behind it.
